Life Balance: find your peace

life balanceLife Balance is something many of us strive for. But what does Life Balance actually mean?

For me it is making time for my family, work, home and leisure activities. You may have a slightly different list depending on your own personal circumstances. It is worthwhile taking a moment to think what exactly life balance means to you.

Obtaining balance in your life, like most worthwhile things needs constant commitment and effort. However the rewards can be great. When you have balance in your life you will find you gain the following.

  • The ability to stay calm
  • A clarity of thought
  • Improved confidence
  • Consistent motivation

This in turn will help reduce stress and anxiety from your daily life.

With these things in mind, here are some tips on how to get the balance back into your life.

Take a step back

Look at how your life is structured. Get pen to paper and write down all the things you want to improve. Is it making time for you or your family, taking up a new sporting activity, or finally completing that project that you have been putting off?  After 5 minutes of thought it should become apparent the areas of your life you have been neglecting.

Have a plan

Set out a weekly schedule. Write down all your tasks that you already do. Be realistic with time. Focus on adding some time for you first. This can be reading a book, playing golf, cooking, listening to music etc… Make it something you love, or really want to do. If we have something to look forward to it enhances motivation and gives focus.

Secondly put a task down that you have been putting off but really needs attention. When you have allocated time for this task action it straight away. We spend so much time putting things off and thinking about it. If we action straight away we have saved time and stress. Half the battle is just starting. Give this task at least 15 minutes of your time.

Be Mindful

In everything you do try to be present and mindful. Life gets so busy that we don’t live in the moment. Really listen to those around you and the beauty of nature. Switch off all technology distractions occasionally. There are so many devices that we are devoting time to that we are missing out on living life.

Communicate

Making time to communicate one on one with those that are important to us is something that we often neglect. If communication is an issue in your household why not try a structured weekly family meeting? I find these are excellent forums that bring forth ideas and empower everyone into action. Make sure you discuss and plan time for fun activities, chores and projects.

Stay Motivated

Make sure you have allocated downtime and stop doing activities that drain your energy. Always look at improving your weekly schedule. Avoid multi-tasking and concentrate at one thing at a time.

Most importantly always have something to look forward to. Set goals with a focus and reward yourself once you have achieved them.
